About the program

Cash transfer program that contributes to fighting poverty and inequality in Brazil. It was created in October 2003 and aims to benefit families living in poverty and extreme poverty, meaning all families with per capita income of up to BRL$77 (USD$20) and families with income per capita between BRL$77.01 and BRL$154 (USD$40) provided they have children and adolescents aged 0-17 years.

Cash transfers

The monthly value of the cash transfer received by the beneficiary family is the sum of various types of benefits under the program. The types and amounts of benefits the families receive depend on family composition and income per capita.

Basic earnings: worth BRL$77 (USD$20). It is paid to extremely poor families whose monthly income per person is up to BRL$77 (USD$20).

Varying benefits: each one for BRL$35 (USD$9) with a maximum of 5 benefits per family.

  1. Varying benefits linked to children or adolescents aged 0-15 years. It is paid to families with monthly income of up to BRL$154 (USD$40) per person and that have children or adolescents of 0-15 years. Children and adolescents aged 6 to 15 years of age are required to fully comply with school attendance.
  2. Varying benefits linked to pregnant women. It is paid to families with monthly income of up to BRL$154 (USD$40) per person and there is a pregnant woman within the family. It is composed of nine monthly transfers.
  3. Varying benefits linked to breastfeeding. It is paid to families with a monthly income of up to BRL$154 (USD$40) per person and includes infants between 0 and 6 months within each family. This benefit is to reinforce infant feeding, living with or without the birth mother. Six monthly transfers are paid and to be able to obtain the benefit the infant must be enrolled in the "Catastro Único" until the baby’s six months of life.

Varying benefits linked to adolescents: Worth BRL$42 (up to two per family). Families that have a monthly income of up to BRL$154 (USD$40) per person and that have adolescents between 16 and 17 years. They are required to fully comply with school attendance.

Benefit for overcoming extreme poverty: The value of this benefit is calculated individually for each family. The benefit is paid to families who live with a monthly income lower than BRL$77 (USD$20), even after receiving the benefits. The value of the benefit is calculated according to income and the number of persons in the family, to guarantee that with the benefit the families exceed the minimum income floor of BRL$77 (USD$20) per person.

Target population

Families living in poverty and extreme poverty, all families with a per capita income of up to BRL$77 (USD$20) and families with a per capita income between BRL$77.01 and BRL 154 (USD$40) provided they have children and/or adolescents aged 0-17 years.

They must comply with the following responsibilities:

  • Education. Those responsible must enroll their children and adolescents aged 6 to 17 years in schools. Children and adolescents aged 6 to 15 years must comply with at least 85% attendance (monthly) and adolescents between 16 and 17 must comply with at least 75% (monthly).
  • Health. Those responsible must take their children under 7 years of age to get vaccines recommended by health teams and to be weighed, measured and monitor their growth and development. Pregnant women should go to prenatal care and assist consultations in health units.
