It is a program of the Ministry of Health which contributes to improving the health of people, through education, prevention, care, food and nutrition surveillance and research to ensure optimal nutritional status of the population.

Objectives

General objective

Contribute to improving the health of people, through education, prevention, care, food and nutrition surveillance and research, under nutrition standards to ensure optimal nutritional status of the population.

Specific objectives

  1. Guide and promote food and nutrition actions within the framework of comprehensive care for health and diseases for the Panamanian population.
  2. Develop food supplement programs and micronutrient supplementation for vulnerable groups in marginal urban and rural areas.
  3. Establish the rules defining actions for the Nutritional Health programs.
  4. Design research applied to the field of food and nutrition within the perspective of food security.
  5. Assess the indicators on the nutritional status of the population and the problems of malnutrition and its consequences.
  6. Supervise at a regional level, the result of the implementation of programs based on the established objective.
  7. Advise according to established rules, to the government and private institutions, on issues related to aspects of food and nutrition.
  8. Participate with the Technical Committee of the National Secretariat for the Nutritional Food Plan (SENAPAN), in the formulation, implementation and evaluation of the Nutrition Plan.
  9. Evaluate national food and nutrition programs.
  10. Formulate programs and projects of a nutritional character, for the prevention and control of malnutrition.
  11. Participate with the Interagency Commission in defining the technical criteria for the purchase of equipment and supplies.
  12. Participate in the formulation and updating of standards of food and nutrition care for different programs.
  13. Develop and update in conjunction with regional standards, rules and regulations for Nutrition and Diet Service in hospitals.
  14. Monitor compliance with the rules and regulations for the Nutrition and Diet Services and Food Services Standards in hospitals.
  15. Participate in the approval of the Interagency Technical Committee to define the technical specifications for the procurement of equipment and supplies.
  16. Advise on the development of the Plan of Good Practices, Manufacturing and Sanitation Standard Procedures for Hospital Food Services.
  17. Develop the educational component of the Food and Nutrition Education projects and educational material design that allows the adoption of appropriate nutritional behaviors that promote health.
  18. Regional level monitoring for the implementation of programs of education and communication in food and nutrition.
  19. Coordinate with the Ministry of Health’s substantive Programs, inclusion and updating of the contents of food and nutrition.
  20. Ensure compliance with laws on food information and education to the population.
  21. Evaluate national indicators on factors associated with the nutritional status of the population.
  22. Define and apply the forms and procedures to systematize and analyze information on food and nutrition.
  23. Formulate indicators in the areas of food and nutrition, which allow different levels to collect the required information.
  24. Coordinate, jointly with the Department of Food Nutrition Research, the formulation of indicators at the national level.
  25. Prepare documents on nutritional food situation in the country, to provide the technical and managerial levels with information to establish standards, strategies, objectives and policies.
  26. Define the different thematic areas of nutritional food research and develop projects in line with scientific advances.

Nutritional health: The program performs actions in the areas of education, prevention, care, food and nutrition surveillance and research, under nutrition standards to ensure optimal nutritional status of the population.

Delivery of micronutrients: The program provides food supplements and micronutrient supplementation for vulnerable groups in marginal urban and rural areas.

Target population

Panama population in general with special emphasis on the most vulnerable groups in marginal urban and rural areas.
