About the program

School Feeding Program which was first implemented in 1989 and executed by the Institute of Food Supply, under the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Aquaculture and Fisheries; it provides food for the complete 200 days of the school year for children from the ages of 3 to 4 during Early Childhood Education; also, for children and adolescents from the ages of 5 to 14 attending General Basic Education (EGB) in public educational institutions, partly State funded institutions, and rural and urban municipal education.

General objective

Contribute to improving the quality and efficiency of basic education by providing a food supplement, mainly in areas with a higher incidence of poverty.

Specific objectives

  1. Help alleviate immediate hunger of the target group,
  2. Contribute to improving school attendance in areas affected by poverty,
  3. Help reduce repetition rates and dropout rates in the program’s targeted schools,
  4. Contribute to improving the learning capacity of students: attention, concentration and retention.

Complementary objectives

  1. To help improve the nutritional status of children served by the program,
  2. Consolidate the organization.
Components and/or products

Breakfast for Early Childhood Education

It includes a flavorful fortified meal (“colada”) and a wafer; while the snack consists of 200 ml flavored whole milk in a “Tetra Brik” package.

Breakfast for General Basic Education

It is made up of five products: Flavorful fortified meal (“colada”), traditional cookie, stuffed cookie, cereal bar and flaked granola, while the snack consists of 200 ml of flavored whole milk in a Tetra Brik package.

School lunch

During the 2014-2015 school year, school lunch delivery is planned exclusively for children in Early Childhood Education, students attending Basic General Education and High School students which attend afternoon sessions at the Millennium Educational Units. School lunch is delivered ready to consume in Educational Institutions, its elaboration is based on the nutritional requirements of students according to their age group, and its preparation is made with fresh local produce, promoting local procurement directly from small producers.

Target population

Children from the ages of 3 to 5 attending Early Childhood Education; and children and youths from the ages of 5 to 14 years attending General Basic Education in public educational institutions in rural and urban areas (food will be provided to these students); and students in urban public educational institutions (snacks or refreshments will be provided).
