About the program

It is a conditional cash transfer program created in 2008: it aims to promote the retention and reintegration into the formal education system of adolescents and youth from families who are struggling to keep their children in the education system due to economic reasons. It contributes by increasing families’ income, promoting access to education and universal access to secondary school, reducing poverty, reverse the number of students behind in grade, prevent school failure and prevent child labor.

Objectives

Objective

Promote retention and reintegration into the formal education system for adolescents and youth from families who are struggling to keep their children in the education system due to economic reasons.

Components and/or products

Conditional Cash Transfer

The program provides a monthly cash transfer per child who is enrolled in any of the forms of formal secondary public education. The transfer amount varies according to the level of education completed by the child:

  • 7th grade: CRC$22,500 (USD$41)
  • 8th grade: CRC$22,500 (USD$41)
  • 9th grade: CRC$22,500 (USD$41)
  • 10th grade: CRC$35,000 (USD$64)
  • 11th grade: CRC$35,000 (USD$64)
  • 12th grade: CRC$35,000 (USD$64)

Beneficiary families take responsibility to fulfill the following responsibilities:

  • Promote interest and ensure permanent assistance of students to school or other educational forms in the national formal education system.
  • Deliver and / or update all documents requested by the institution within the prescribed time with true and correct information.
  • Participate in activities or meetings of the Joint Institute for Social Aid (IMAS) in order to improve the living conditions of the family.
  • Making proper use of the benefit in accordance with the provisions of the IMAS.
  • Immediately inform to IMAS if students move from schools, abandon, repeat the same level for two consecutive years or change their address during the current academic year.
  • Immediately inform the IMAS if it receives an economic amount that does not correspond to the academic level at which the student is enrolled / student.

 There is no limit to the number of students a family applies for, regarding the AVANCEMOS Program, as long they meet the requirements.
