School Feeding Program

About the program

The School Feeding Program aims to deliver food services (breakfast, lunch, “once”, snacks and dinners as seen necessary) to the vulnerable students from municipal and subsidized private educational establishments during the school year, for Early Childhood (Pre-Kinder and Kinder), Primary and Secondary education, in order to improve their attendance and help prevent dropouts. It covers both curricular activities and extracurricular during the school year and summer and winter holidays.

Improve school attendance and retain students in the educational system, through the delivery healthy, varied and nutritious school meals, enabling children’s physical and mental development that fosters and encourages concentration and necessary learning for their academic success.

Components and/or products

School Feeding

The program provides a daily ration of food per student, complementary and differentiated, consisting of:

  • Breakfast or “once”, and
  • Lunch.

It covers about a third of the nutritional needs of the day school for children and youth in primary and secondary education, and between 45 and 50% of the requirements for preschool. Food is delivered to each school establishment that requires it throughout the school year and that, also, presents conditions of vulnerability, according to the Vulnerability Index.

Target population

Students in vulnerable situations attending municipal schools and subsidized private schools in the country, attending primary and secondary levels as well as pre-school, and selected by the National Board of Student Aid and Scholarships (JUNAEB).
