Pro-Huerta Program

About the program

Pro-Huerta Program aims for self-production based on agro-ecology, its main objective is to improve food sovereignty, encourage participation and organization of vulnerable sectors of the population and promote the commercialization of production surpluses. With its 23 years of development, the Pro Huerta works in training and technical assistance for families, organizations and community organizations, provides inputs such as seed, fruit, livestock and tools. It is a program of the Ministry of Social Development and the National Agricultural Technology Institute.

Objectives

Objectives

  1. To improve food sovereignty, encourage participation and organization of vulnerable sectors of the population and promote the commercialization of production surpluses.
  2. To improve food security for the population that lives in poverty (unsatisfied basic needs (NBI) or under the poverty line), by complementing and diversifying diets with self-production on a small scale of fresh food, using gardens or orchards and self-production farms for the families, schools, communities and institutions.
Components and/or products
  • Training and technical assistance
    Technical assistance is provided in production processes that include a surplus for trade fairs with agro-ecological social economies and the acquisition of skills to take on productive entrepreneurships. Also trains volunteers that promote the community.
  • Agricultural inputs
    It provides inputs such as seeds, fruit, livestock and tools.
  • Technologies
    Generate, adapt and apply appropriate technologies
  • Gardens or orchards
     The program helps create family, community and school gardens or orchards.
Target population

Socially vulnerable population comprised of urban and rural families with NBI or under the poverty line.

Children in schools belonging to critical areas, with priority for those with school cafeterias or in economically deprived, marginal or dispersed rural areas.
