School Breakfast Program

About the program

This is Mexico’s School Feeding Program. It aims to promote proper nutrition within the school population, subject to welfare status, through a warm and cold school breakfast. Its design is based on Nutrition Quality Criteria, and is complemented by actions related to nutritional education, quality assurance and food production.

Objectives

Contribute, through nutritional improvement for preschool and school children population that are malnourished or at risk, school achievement and decreasing absenteeism in children at risk of malnutrition in marginalized areas.

Components and/or products

Breakfast delivery service in two ways:

  • Cold meals modality consists of different processed and long shelf life foods. It comes with the same features as the evening ration.
  • Hot meals modality integrates comprehensive regional customs relate to food consumption for children as well as rescuing and respecting communities’ food culture.
Target population

Children with some degree of malnutrition or at risk of suffering from it, attending public schools in preschool and primary education, located in indigenous, rural and marginalized urban areas, preferably.
