About the program

The program promotes school attendance and child retention, with the participation of the community and close interagency coordination in municipalities with high and very high food insecurity and extreme poverty. It seeks to improve nutritional status and access to education.

Objectives

The Program’s aim (the Information System for Early Childhood) is to improve nutritional status and access to education, promoting school attendance and child retention, with the participation of the community and close inter institutional coordination in municipalities with very high and high food insecurity and extreme poverty.

Its strategic guidelines are:

  1. Priority attention to specific population groups
    The project's activities will focus on groups of children who attend preschool levels as well as first and second graders of all public schools in the country, which is where care is provided to children from the poorest sectors of the population, making food available to this population, this food should be of high nutritional value and hygienically adequate through timely deliveries. In the case of municipalities in a more critical nutritional situation food delivery (school breakfast) is increased.
  2. Organization and participation of communities in development projects
    Teachers, multidisciplinary health teams in each of the Local Systems of Health Assistance (Suais), parents of schoolchildren incorporated into the School Boards and organized communities in its various expressions take the lead in driving the project on a day to day basis, and regarding educational measures to promote positive changes in eating patterns and habits.
  3. Use of local inputs and appropriate technology
    For effective project implementation, the use of relevant technology should be ensured, based on the needs and demands of each of the areas where a production center is established, as well as the viability and feasibility of its application. The use of available local resources will be practiced insofar as is possible in order to contribute to the promotion of internal development.
  4. Inter sectoral coordination at different levels
    Addressing social problems that justify the formulation and development of this project will require the active participation and concerted action of multidisciplinary and inter sectoral teams, national or foreign, in order to interact with the community.
  5. Search for self-sustainability
    In order to ensure the continuity of nutritional interventions, operational mechanisms should be identified and introduced in order to facilitate progressive self-financing of productive activity, which is a very important aspect to take into consideration, given the preventive nature that this program has and its importance for the future economic development of the country.

  • Snacks for students from pre-school and primary of all public schools in the country.
  • School breakfast to students for municipalities in critical nutritional situation.

Children between 3 and 12 years of age that are attending school.
