Food and Nutrition Security Strategy for Guyana 2010 - 2020

General information

It aims to improve the health and welfare of the inhabitants of the country, especially the most vulnerable, by ensuring food security and nutrition. To accomplish the aforementioned, the following is proposed:

  • Facilitate opportunities for sustainable employment generation in order to increase the availability and accessibility of food;
  • Promote information systems, education and dissemination, for the use and consumption of healthy foods for better nutrition;
  • Promote greater institutional coordination for food security and nutrition.

Objectives

General objective

Improve health and the well-being of all people living in Guyana by improving food security and nutrition.

Specific objectives and axes

  • Facilitate opportunities for sustainable employment generation which, in hand, increase food availability and accessibility.
    • Improve production and availability of quality non-traditional agricultural products for local consumption and for exports.
    • Facilitate marketing (storage and distribution) healthy and quality food for domestic consumption and for export.
    • Improve employment opportunities and access to food for vulnerable groups not linked to agriculture.
    • Reduce rural and urban poverty.
    • Reduce vulnerability / risk of natural disasters, especially floods.
  • Promote information, education and dissemination systems in order to promote the use and consumption of healthy foods for better nutrition.
    • Ensure food safety and quality control through the introduction of appropriate legislative and institutional frameworks.
    • Promote hygiene practices and safety for processors, handlers and consumers.
    • Improving nutritional practices and diet at home.
  • Promote greater institutional coordination for food security and nutrition.
    • Establish effective mechanisms to facilitate inter-sectoral dialogue on key issues affecting food security and nutrition.
    • Expand basic knowledge of the components of food security and issues related to it in the public sector, civil society organizations and non-governmental organizations.
    • Establish effective coordination between programs and their monitoring mechanisms.

General population, with emphasis on the most vulnerable groups.
