National Food Production Action Plan

General information

Food and Nutrition Security is paramount for Santa Lucia. Rising global food prices affect the country and imply that access to food for the average person in Saint Lucia may be affected and problematic. Rising international prices can also have negative impacts on the country's trade balance because the import bill would be even higher. Another important consideration is the nutritional status of Saint Lucians, the food consumption patterns have changed due to the increasing dependence on food imports. In that context, the Plan seeks to achieve four objective arises:

  1. Reduce the import bill by 10% in the first 2 years of implementing the plan and 30% over the next 3 years.
  2. Providing long-term and sustainable employment.
  3. Stable domestic food prices.
  4. Diversification of the agricultural sector.
