Family Farming and Rural Entrepreneurship Plan for Food and Nutrition Security

General information

PAF is a policy that the Government of El Salvador implemented through the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAG), since the end of February 2011. Its main objective is to reduce levels of rural poverty by generating wealth and welfare for families who work in family farming in priority territories. It also seeks to incorporate Commercial Family Farming into structured concentrated systems for supply and increased productivity through technology transfer, equipment and infrastructure. It also establishes a contribution in increasing the competitiveness of domestic agriculture through stimulation and knowledge management, promoting the creation and growth of innovative producers through incubation of ideas and generating new technologies, entrepreneurial projects and other added value services.

Contribute in reducing rural poverty through wealth and welfare creation for families in the territories of El Salvador.

Objectives of the programs that make up the Plan

  1. National Supply Program for Food and Nutritional Security: Increase the availability, access and consumption through improved production systems and supply of rural families.
  2. Family Farming Program for Productive Chains: Increase the level of net income of rural families by improving the competitiveness of rural businesses and agro productive chains.
  3. Agricultural Innovation Program: Provide the knowledge and technologies that actors in added value agricultural chains demand in order to increase and sustain its competitiveness in the market.
  4. Liaison Program with Industry and Trade: Establish coordination mechanisms and incentives with private sector companies to encourage business between big business and small and medium family farmers associations.

Families living in poverty in rural areas of the country.

Number of beneficiaries

The PAF serves 395 thousand families living in poverty in rural areas of the country.
